The Sound of Music Class 9 Summary in English

I. Evelyn Glennie
The lesson The Sound of Music's first part is about Evelyn, a scottish girl, who was very fond of music. She became deaf at the age of eleven and loss of hearing had been gradual.

Once Evelyn was waiting to play the piano, when her name was announced but she did not move. Then her mother notice something wrong with Evelyn and took her to a doctor.

The doctor confirmed her deafness and adviced her mother to sent Evelyn to a deaf school. Then everything turned black for Evelyn.

But Evelyn was determined to lead a normal life and persue her interest in music. She was noticed by her Famous percussionist Ron Forbes. He adviced her to feel the music instead of hearing. He exercised her to feel the music through her body parts by playing two large drums in two different notes.

From then her musical journey began, she never looked back. She learned to feel music and later went to London and joined the Royal Academy of Music.

Evelyn scored highest marks in the history of the academy. Gradually she left the orchestra and started giving solo performances. She was flawless in playing musical instrument without hearing. She delighted her audiences and  won many awards and honors.

Besides her regular concert she gives free concerts in prison, hospital and for fund collection for deaf children. She is a shining inspiration for deaf children.

II. Bismillah Khan
The second part is about the development of instrument, Shehani. Emperor Aurangazeb banned the playing of a musical instrument 'Pungi'. in the royal residence as it had a shrill unpleasant sound.

Later pungi was developed to shenai by nai (barber), it is made up with a large natural hollow steam pipe, it has seven holes on its body and sound is melodious. The instrument named as shehnai as it was made by a nai and played infront of Shah.

The credit for bringing pungi on to the classical stage goes to Ustad Bismillah Khan. When he was five years old, he played gilli danda near a pond in Dumraon in Bihar. Bismillah  khan belongs to a well known family of musicians from Bihar. His grandfather Rasool Bux Khan, was the Shehnai nawaz of the Bhojpur King's Court.

Bismillah Khan took to music early in life. When he was three  years old, his mother took him to his uncle's house, there he saw uncle practising Shehnai and got attracted to Shehnai.

Soon he started accompanying his uncle Ali Bux to the Vishnu temple of Benaras. At the age of 14, Bismillah Khan accompanied his uncle to the Allahabad Music Conference. In 1938, Bismillah Khan got chance to play Shehanai with the opening of All India Radio, in Lucknow.

Bismillah Khan performed many memorable function in India as well as in foreign countries. Bismillah Khan was awarded with many honourable awards like the India's highest civilian award the Bharat Ratna.

Film director Vijay Bhatt was very impressed and named a film on the instrument 'Gunj Uthi Shehnai'. Bismillah Khan even composed music for film and gave a nationwide chartbuster hit "Dil ka khilona hai toot gaya."

Ans: Apart from her hectic international concert Evelyn performed for various causes and places. She performed free concerts in prison and hospitals. Evelyn also performed for deaf and handicapped.

Q1. How did Evelyn hear music ? 
Ans: Evelyn was deaf but she feel music. She could sense certain notes in different parts of her body, she learnt to open her body and mind to sound and vibration. She could feel music through every parts of her body even through her hair and skin. While playing Xylophone, she could seen the sound passing up the stick into the finger tips. When playing on a wooden platform she used to remove her shoes so that she could feel vibration through her bare feet.
