The story revolves around the author Zan Gaudioso. He was sad as he got into a new high school. He did not have his old friends and was a junior there. He missed the old school and he would visit it often. He had enjoyed being a senior there. 

To add to his miseries, one Sunday afternoon, his house caught fire. Other than a few papers and photos of his father that were retrieved by his mother, they lost everything. Zan did not even have a pair of shoes. His pet cat was also gone missing during the fire.

Zan got depressed and did not want to attend school. He realized that he could not soak up in his sadness as they had to rebuild their life. They needed a new house, clothes, books, etc. They did not have any cash, credit cards or identity proofs and thus had to borrow money from his grandparents.

One day at school, Zan was astonished to see a table full of things like books, stationary items, clothes, etc which had been collected by his classmates. They were helping Zan to come over the bad times . 

Zan was overwhelmed and made friends. He came out of the depression and realized that life was beautiful. Zan saw his house being rebuilt and felt that same was happening with his life too.

A kind woman returned his cat which had run away on being scared of the fire. Zan became full of life when he realized that life was not about material possessions but about love, affection and being with one’s loved ones.

कहानी लेखक ज़ान गौडिओसो के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है।  नए हाई स्कूल में दाख़िल होते ही वह दुखी हो गया।  उसके पुराने दोस्त नहीं थे और वह एक जूनियर था।  वह पुराने स्कूल से चूक गया था और वह अक्सर उससे मिलने आता था।  उन्होंने वहां सीनियर होने का आनंद लिया था।

अपने दुखों को जोड़ने के लिए, एक रविवार की दोपहर, उनके घर में आग लग गई।  अपने पिता के कुछ पत्रों और तस्वीरों के अलावा जो उनकी मां द्वारा पुनर्प्राप्त किए गए थे, उन्होंने सब कुछ खो दिया।  ज़ान के पास एक जोड़ी जूते भी नहीं थे।  आग के दौरान उनकी पालतू बिल्ली भी लापता हो गई थी।

ज़ैन उदास हो गई और स्कूल नहीं जाना चाहती थी।  उन्होंने महसूस किया कि वह अपनी उदासी में नहीं डूब सकते क्योंकि उन्हें अपने जीवन का पुनर्निर्माण करना था।  उन्हें एक नए घर, कपड़े, किताबें आदि की आवश्यकता थी, उनके पास कोई नकदी, क्रेडिट कार्ड या पहचान प्रमाण नहीं थे और इस तरह उन्हें अपने दादा दादी से पैसे उधार लेने पड़े।

स्कूल में एक दिन, ज़ैन को किताबों, स्थिर वस्तुओं, कपड़े, आदि जैसी चीजों से भरी एक मेज को देखकर बहुत आश्चर्य हुआ, जो उसके सहपाठियों द्वारा एकत्र की गई थी।  वे बुरे समय पर आने के लिए ज़ैन की मदद कर रहे थे।

ज़ैन अभिभूत था और दोस्त बना।  वह अवसाद से बाहर आया और महसूस किया कि जीवन सुंदर था।  ज़ैन ने अपने घर को फिर से बनते हुए देखा और महसूस किया कि ऐसा ही उसके जीवन के साथ भी हो रहा है।

एक प्रकार की महिला ने अपनी बिल्ली को लौटा दिया जो आग से डरने पर भाग गई थी।  ज़ैन जीवन से भरा हुआ था जब उसे महसूस हुआ कि जीवन भौतिक संपत्ति के बारे में नहीं बल्कि प्यार, स्नेह और किसी के प्रियजनों के साथ होने के बारे में है।

Ans: One Sunday afternoon, the author noticed a strange smell. Then he saw smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling and filling the room very quickly. They could barely see anything. By the time they ran out into the front yard, the roof was already engulfed in flames and was spreading very quickly.

His mother ran back into the house. She had brought out a small metal box full of important documents. She wanted to bring out important things from the house one by one. She was in a ‘crazed state’.

Q2. Why does he break down in tears after the fire ? Ans: After the fire, he broke down into tears because it suddenly struck him that he was suffering a big loss. He realized that his cat could not be seen anywhere. Then, everything hit him at once - the new school, the fire, and his cat. That was when he broke down and cried.

Ans: The author is deeply embarrassed the next day in school because when the fire broke out, he was still wearing the dress he had worn to church that morning but he had no shoes as he had lost them in the fire. So he had to borrow some tennis shoes from his aunt. He was totally embarrassed by everything. The clothes he was wearing looked weird, he had no books or homework, and his backpack was gone.

The cat was so freaked by the fire and ran a mile away from the house. One woman found her and took her in. She located the author’s number on the cat’s collar. However, she couldn’t reach them as the phone had been disconnected because of the fire. The woman then made personal efforts to find the author and returned back the cat.
