Keeping Quiet Class 12 line by line Explanation AHSEC HS 2nd Year

Stanza 1 & 2

Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still.
For once on the face of the Earth
let’s not speak in any language,
let’s stop for one second,
and not move our arms so much.

Explanation : The poet Pablo Neruda begins the poem with an appeal to all human beings to count till twelve and remain silent and motionless for a while. He wants that people should not utter a single word in any language and restrict all physical activities. For once, everyone on this Earth should try to calm and quite.

• Stanza 3 & 4

It would be an exotic moment
without rush, without engines,
we would all be together
in a sudden strangeness.
Fishermen in the cold sea
would not harm whales
and the man gathering salt
would look at his hurt hands.

Explanation : It would be a significantly fascinating instant when all would be quite, without any noise or movement, without hustle and this moment of profound silence would bring us together and closer to each other.  In the prevailing moment of inactivity there would be no instance of hurt or injury. The fisherman(hunter) in the cold polar region would restrain from hunting whales and the man gathering salt(labour) would have some respite to tend to his hurt hands.

• Stanza 5

Those who prepare green wars,
wars with gas, wars with fire,
victory with no survivors,
would put on clean clothes
and walk about with their
brothers
in the shade, doing nothing.

Explanation : In the moment of silence, the poet calls upon the perpetrators of war to discard their ruthless path and join hands with their brothers to live a life of peace and tranquility. Be it the environment or the human race, wars being destruction. Victory comes at the cost of several human lives. Instead of being at war and spreading hatred, people should learn to coexist in peace and enjoy the state of rest and relaxation.

• Stanza 6 to 8

What I want should not be
confused
with total inactivity.
Life is what it is about;
I want no truck with death.
If we were not so single-minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves with
death.
Perhaps the Earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.
Now I’ll count up to twelve
and you keep quiet and I will go.

Explanation : The poet tries to mean total inactivity or sluggishness, because that would mean the end of everything and he does not want any association with death. Our single minded focus on selfish motives keeps us constantly moving towards elusive progress or gains. But little do we realise that without even a moment's respite and introspection we are threatening our lives with death. The poet hopes that if we just pause for a while and listen to our hearts we will understand ourselves better and thus prevent the process of self destruction.

There is a lot to learn from the earth and mother nature, which is very and ever quite and calm but always proved alive and productive. Even in apparent stillness, the earth does not stop its creation.

Thus, the poet leaves it to us to be quite and at peace with ourselves.
