Tense Correction

Tense Correction: Tense is changes of form in a verb according to the time of an action or event or to express the time of an action. A verb indicates the time of an action, event or condition by changing its form.

Example:
I go to school - (Simple Present) 
I went to school - (Simple Past) 
I shall go to school - (Simple Future) 


Correct Tense

In English grammar there is three forms of Tense. 
1. Present Tense 
2. Past Tense 
3. Future Tense

These three tenses has four parts each. 

1. Present Tense: Present Tense describes an action of the present moment.

• The four Present Tenses are -
(i) Simple Present / Present Indefinite 
(ii) Present Continuous / Present Progressive 
(iii) Present Perfect 
(iv) Present Perfect Continuous 

2. Past Tense: Past Tense describes an action that happened at past time.

• The four Past Tenses are -
(i) Simple Past 
(ii) Past continuous 
(iii) Past Perfect 
(iv) Past Perfect Continuous 

3. Future Tense: Future Tense describes an action that going to take place in future time.

• The four Future Tenses are -
(i) Simple Future 
(ii) Future Continuous
(iii) Future Perfect 
(iv) Future Perfect Continuous



Tense correction formula

1. Simple Present Tense
Structure : 
(i) Subject + Verb + Object
e.g. Water flows downward, He goes to school on foot.
(ii) Subject + am / is / are + Verb (ppt) + Object
e.g. Bihu is celebrated in Assam.

# Open Condition
If + Subject + Verb, Subject + Shall / will / can + Verb + Object
e.g. If it rains, I shall not go out.

2. Present Continuous Tense
Structure :
Subject + am / is / are + Verb + ing + Object
e.g. I am going to apply for the post.

3. Present Perfect Tense
Structure :
Subject + have / has / V (ppt) + Object
e.g. I have seen the Tajmahal.

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense
Structure :
Subject + have / has + been + Verb + ing + Object + since / for + time
e.g. She has been working here since 2006

5. Simple Past Tense
Structure
(i) Subject + Verb (past) + Object
e.g. He went to Shillong yesterday.
(ii) Subject + was / were + Verb (ppt) + Object
e.g. Socrates was taken to prison.

# Imaginary Condition
If + Subject + be (were) + Object, Subject + should / would / could + Verb. 
e.g. If I were a bird, I could fly.

6. Past Continuous Tense
Structure
Subject + was / were + Verb + ing + Object
e.g. He was standing at the bus stand, I saw.

7. Past Perfect Tense
Structure
Subject + had + Verb (ppt) + Object
e.g. We had reached the field before the game started.

# Unfulfilled Condition
If + Subject + had + Verb (ppt), Subject + should / would / could + have + Verb (ppt) 
e.g. If you had gone there you could have met him.

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Subject + had + been + Verb + ing + Object
e.g. The boy had been sitting under the tree when it fell down.

9. Simple Future Tense
Structure 
Subject + shall / will + Verb + Object
e.g. I shall do the work.

10. Future Continuous Tense
Structure
Subject + shall / will + be + Verb + ing + Object
e.g. He will be working on this.

11. Future Perfect Tense
Structure
Subject + shall / will + have + Verb + ing + Object
e.g. I shall have done the work by this evening.

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense
Structure
Subject + shall/ will + have + been + Verb + ing + Object + since / for + time.
e.g. The boys will have been playing cricket in the ground for an hour.


Correct Tense use

1. Simple Present Tense
(i) To mean Universal Truth
(ii) To mean Habitual Truth
(iii) To indicate day to day event
(iv) To substitute future event  
(v) To introduce quotes with the verb ' says '
(vi) To indicate Things of wonder
(vii) Exclamatory sentence that begin with Here or There  
(viii) Time clause and conditional clause in place of simple future.

2. Present continuous Tense
(i) To describe an action in progress
(ii) An action that is not happening at the time of speaking but is in progress
(iii) An action that has been pre arranged to take place in near future.

3. Present Perfect Tense
(i) To express an action that has recently been completed
(ii) To describe an action whose time is not given
(iii) To express result of an action  
(iv) To show how a past situation relates to the present.

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense
(i) To describe an action that began in the past and is still continuing.
(ii) To express an action already completed but its effect is still continuing.

5. Simple Past Tense
(i) To indicate an action that happened in the past.
(ii) To indicate past habits.
(iii) The habitual action expressed by using ' used to '.
(iv) To indicate historical event.

6. Past Continuous Tense
(i) To indicate an action that was happening at some time in the past.
(ii) An action that was going on during a given period in the past.

7. Past Perfect
(i) To indicate an action that was completed before a definite time.
(ii) An action that took place before another action in the past.
(iii) To indicates desire ( wish / hope ) in the past .
(iv) To express those conditions of the past that were impossible to fulfil ( imaginary condition )

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
(i) To indicates an action that began in the past and continued up to a certain point of time in the past.

9. Simple Future Tense
(i) To indicate that we think or believe will happen in future.
(ii) Things which we can not control and that are factual.
(iii) To indicates an instant decision.

10. Future Continuous Tense
(i) To indicate an action that will occur in the normal course.
(ii) To indicate an action that will be in progress at a given point of time in the future.

11. Future Perfect Tense
(i) To describe an action which will be completed at some point of time in the future.

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense. 
(i) To describe an action that will be in progress over a period of time that will end in the future.



Tense correction for class 9

1. Do not disturb, he (work) now.
Ans: Do not disturb, he is working now.

2. It (rain) since eight O'clock this morning.
Ans: It has been raining since eight O'clock this morning.

3. When we went to his house, he (read) a book.
Ans: When we went to his house, he was reading a book.

4. She behaves as if she (know) everything.
Ans: She behaves as if she knew everything.

5. Socrates (take) away to prison.
Ans: Socrates was taken away to prison.

6. He (go) to shillong last month.
Ans: He went to shillong last month.

7. I (read) the book since today morning.
Ans: I have been reading the book since today morning.

8. If I (be ) a bird, I could fly.
Ans: If I were a bird, I could fly.

9. The sun (rise) in the east.

18. She (be) here for 10 years.
Ans: She has been here for 10 years.

19. He (come) here tomorrow.
Ans: He comes here tomorrow.

20. He (kill) in the last battle.
Ans: He was killed in the last battle.


Tense correction for class 12 / Tense correction for H.S. 2nd year

• HS 1995
a) Recently the price of Sugar (go) up.
= Recently the price of Sugar has gone up.

b) I (do) lot of work to-day.      
= I shall have to do lot of work to-day.

c) The train (leave) before we reached the station.      
= The train had left before we reached the station.

d) I wish my brother (be) here.
= I wish my brother were here.

e) As he (cross) the road a bus knocked him down.
=  As he was crossing the road a bus knocked him down.

f) I (think) of going aboard for quite sometime.
= I have been thinking of going aboard for quite sometime.

g) This paper (appear) twice a week.
= This paper appears twice a week.

• HS 1996
a) She (read) a book when I met her.
= She was reading a book when I met her.

b) The game (start) before we reached the field.
= The game had started before we reached the field.

c) I (go) to apply for the post.
= I am going to apply for the post.

= It has been raining since ten O'clock.

e) She talks as if she (know) everything.
= She talks as if she knew everything.

f) I would have helped him if I (be) present.
= I would have helped him if I were present.

g) Death (come) to everyone sooner or later.
= Death comes to everyone sooner or later.

• HS 1997
a) When we went out, it still (rain).
= When we went out, it still was raining.

b) If I (be) a bird, I could fly.
= If I were a bird, I could fly.

c) It is ten years since I (see) him.
= It is ten years since I saw him.

d) She (be) in Calcutta since 1990.
= She has been in Calcutta since 1990.

= I have taken my meals just now.

= They had reached home before it grew dark.

• HS 1998

= I wish I were a king.

= Father is reading a newspaper now.

e) She (sleep) when I arrived.
= She was sleeping when arrived.

g) He (stay) here until you return.
= He will stay here until you return.

• HS 1999
a) He usually (go) to bed at 10 pm.
= He usually goes to bed at 10 pm.

b) The old man (die) only an hour ago.
= The old man died only an hour ago.

d) He went home after he (finish) the work.
= He went home after he had finished the work.

= I was working in the garden when he came.

= We have been living in this town for two years.

• HS 2000
a) I (see) him a week ago.
= I saw him a week ago.

b) The boy (sleep), do not disturb him.
= The boy is sleeping, do not disturb him.

= His father had died before the doctor arrived.

d) I (work) on this project for the last two years.
= I have been working on this project for the last two years.

e) When we went to him, he (teach) his students.
= When we went to him, he  was teaching his students.

f) If I (be) you, I would not do that.
= If I were you, I would not do that.

g) He (come) here every Monday.
= He comes here every Monday.

• HS 2001
a) Mr. Sarma (leave) for Europe  last Friday.
= Mr. Sarma left for Europe last Friday.

b) The train (start) at nine O'clock each morning.
= The train starts at nine O'clock each morning.

c) Ram went out after he (lock) the door.
= Ram went out after he had  locked the door.

d) He behaved as though he (be) mad.
= He behaved as though he were mad.

e) Amal (do) this work for six months.
= Amal has been doing this work for six months.

f) They (go) to the theatre to night.
= They will go to the theatre to night.
= They are going to the theatre to night.

g) He (stay) here until you return.
= He will stay here until you return.

• HS 2002
a) I (know) him for a long time.
 = I have known him for a long time.

b) The light went out while I (read) a newspaper.
 = The light went out while I was reading a newspaper.

c) I (write) the letter before he arrived.
= I had written the letter before he arrived.

d) They (play) since four O'clock.
 = They have been playing since four O'clock.

e) I shall telephone you when he (come) back.
= I shall telephone you when he comes back.

f) If I weren't so tired, I (go) for a walk with you.
= If I weren't so tired, I would have gone for a walk with you.

g) Many people (kill) in the last World War.
 = Many people were killed in the last World War.

• HS 2003
a) I (have) my hair cut whenever it gets too long.
= I have had my hair cut whenever it gets too long.

b) You (play) with dolls when you were a little girl.
= You played with dolls when you were a little girl.

c) They just (arrive) from New York.
=They have just arrived from New York.

d) We (wait) on the platform since three O'clock.
= We have been waiting on the platform since three O'clock.

e) The water in the pond (freeze) last night.
= The water in the pond froze last year.

f) You ever (read) "War and Peace"?    
= Have you ever read "War and Peace"?

g) Wood always (float).
= Wood always floats.

• HS 2004
a) You (enjoy) your English class today?
= Did you enjoy your English class today?

b) My aunt, Jane (hate) girls who made up.
= My aunt, Jane hates girls who made up.

c) How often you (go) to the theatre when you were in London?
= How often did you go to the theatre when you were in  London?

d) You ever (be) to London?
= Have you ever been to London?

e) We already (have) breakfast.
= We already have had breakfast.

f) John (pass) the post-office on his way to work everyday.
= John passes the post-office on his way to work everyday.

g) she (talk) to her neighbour when the baby began to cry.

• HS 2005
a) The baby (cry) because it is hungry.
= The baby is crying because it is hungry.

b) He (kill) in the battle last year.(Simple Past - Passive voice style)
= He was killed in the battle last year.

c) We reached the station after the train (leave).
= We reached the station after the train had left.

d) As he (cross) the road, a car knocked him down.
= As he was crossing the road, a car knocked him down.

e) She (be) in Delhi since 1990.
= She has been in Delhi since 1990.

f) If you (try) hard, you would have succeeded.
= If you tried hard, you would have succeeded.

g) He behaved as though he (be) mad.
= He behaved as though he were mad.

= What have you been doing since morning ?

• HS 2006

= All the answers to the questions are wrong.

d) He (sit) in the library when I saw him.
= He was sitting in the library when I saw him.

e) Your Letter (reach) me yesterday.
= Your letter reached me yesterday.

f) I (wait) for you since morning.
= I have been waiting for you since morning.

g) Football (play) everywhere in the world. (Simple present - Passive voice style).
= Football is played everywhere in the world.

• HS 2017
a) Recently the price of petrol (go) up.
= Recently the price of petrol has gone up.

b) I (do) a lot of work today.
= I have to do a lot of work today.

c) The train (leave) before we reached the station.
= The train had left before we reached the station.

d) I wish my brother (be) there.
= I wish my brother were there.

e) As he (cross) the road a bus knocked him down.
= As he was crossing the road a  bus knocked him down.

= I have been thinking of going aboard for quite sometime.

f) The rubbish van  (come) again in the afternoon tomorrow.
= The rubbish van will come again in the afternoon tomorrow.

• HS 2019
a) I met him while (go) to his office.
= I met him while going to his office.

b) They (live) in this place since 1970.
= They have been living in this place since 1970.

c) The train (leave) before I reached the station.
= The train had left before I reached the station.

d) I wish I (be) a bird.
= I wish I were a bird.

e) Your letter ( reach) me yesterday.
= Your letter reached me yesterday.

f) He (make) a doll now.
= He is making a doll now.
