What is Preposition

A preposition is a word that connects nouns, pronouns and phrases to the other words in a sentence.

A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence and shows appropriate meaning. The words or phrase that the preposition introduces is called the object of the preposition.

A preposition usually indicates the temporal, spatial or logical relationship of its object to the rest of the sentences.

For examples: The book is on the table.
                          The book is under / beneath the table.
                          The book is leaning against the table


Preposition Phrase

A prepositional phrase is made up of the preposition, its object and any associated adverb. A prepositional phrase can function as a noun, an adjective or an adverb.

Preposition example

The list of prepositions are " above, across, after, against, among, around, at, along, by, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, despite, down, during, except, for, from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto, out, outside, over, past, since, through, throughout, till, to, toward, under, underneath, until, up, upon, with, within and without."

Commonly used preposition the commonly used prepositions are " at, in, into, by, with, of, from, for, to, over, above, after, before, upon, against, without .


Types of Preposition

Types of preposition Generally there is two types of preposition on the basis of their formation.
(i) Simple preposition and (ii) Compound preposition.


Simple Preposition

Simple prepositions are formed by only a single word.
example: at, in, on, by, with, of, from, for, to, above, over, before, under, against etc


Compound Preposition

Compound prepositions are formed by more than one word.
example: into, onto, upon, within, without, throughout etc.

  1. Place: He lives at Rajgarh 
  2. Time: I have my breakfast at 8 a.m. 
  3. Certain Place: I met him at his office. 
  4. Direction: Look at him. 
  5. Occupation: He is always at your service. 
  6. Value: Onion sells at 60 rupees a kilo.
