Short summary of The Trees class 10

The poet talks about trees symbolically. They refer to women who have been healed and are ready to move out of their houses to fulfil their primary purpose - to renew the forest of mankind. As women have remained indoors, the forest has become empty, the birds and insects rendered shelterless. The Sun’s rays do not have the tree trucks and leaves to fall upon and thus, reach the earth. She says that the forest will be full of trees the next morning. The roots of the trees are working hard to separate from the floor of the veranda where they have remained fixed. The leaves and branches are moving towards the glass windows. They are desperate to move out just like a newly discharged patient who has not recovered completely, moves to the exit door of the hospital in a hurry. The poet is sitting in her house with the doors of the veranda open. She is writing letters but does not mention this movement of the trees. It is night time, the sky is clear and a bright moon is visible. She can smell the leaves and lichen which seem to be calling out desperately. She hears the glass of the window pane breaking. The trees are moving out and the fast blowing wind embraces them. As the trees have reached the forest, the tall and strong oak tree overshadows the moon and it seems that the moon has been broken into several pieces.

The Trees inside are coming out, they're coming out of those beautiful artificial glass houses where humans have so far confined them. The trees are freeing themselves from the Human Bondage, they are moving out into the forest. The forest has been and will ever be the natural habitat of trees, the trees are metaphors for nature itself. Human civilization and progress have led to the cutting of trees on a large scale, without trees forests have become empty. There are no trees left now where birds can perch themselves on their tops even insects have lost the places where they could hide inside them. There are no trees left in the forest where the red hot Sun could find some cooling by burying itself in their shadows however the poet is hopeful, the forest which remained empty all these nights will be full of trees. The roots continue struggling all night they want to free themselves, they try to come out from the cracks in the veranda floor, the leaves train themselves moving towards the glass, small twigs have become tough and hard the long cramped and crushed branches move repeatedly from one position to the other under the roof. These moving branches look like patients who run out of the hospital in a hurry almost half days they moved to the doors of the hospital to escape from it. The poet is sitting inside doors opened to the veranda she is writing long letters but in those letters she is not describing how the trees are struggling to come out of their artificial habitat. They are going to their real and natural habitat the trees are moving towards the forest which is their real habitat. The night is fresh, the full moon is shining brightly in the sky, the smell of leaves and lichens spreading out into the rooms it comes inside like a voice from outside, The poet is sitting inside, the struggle of the roots, leaves and branches to free themselves from their artificial habitat continues. Her head is full of whispers, these are the whispers of the struggling trees. Then she asks us to listen to those struggling sounds, we will notice that the struggling trees have come out breaking the glass hulls. They are still stumbling but marching forward victoriously towards the forest winds rush forward to welcome the victorious trees. The trees have grown up to such dimensions that have even covered the full moon covered by the leaves and branches of the trees. The full moon looks like a broken mirror into many pieces, these broken pieces of the moon can be seen through the holes of the tallest oak at the top.

• Stanza 1:

The trees inside are moving out into the forest,

Explanation : The poet / speaker of the poem observes that the trees in his house are moving outside into the forest which has been missing for a long time. "Moving" Word has been used as an imaginary by the poet to show the destroyed forests and the false nature that humans have tried to keep in their houses. As the forest was empty without any trees thus no birds could sit on the branches, no insects could hide in the trees and sunlight could never disappear under the shadow of the trees. The speaker also feels that the empty forest will be full of trees by the next morning.

Explanation : Poet says, It seems the trees work silently in the night inorder to complete their mission of getting free from the boundaries of the house. They work all night to make free themselves through the cracks on the veranda floor. The leaves of the trees try very hard to put a lot of pressure on the glass so that they could break it. The small twigs have become very hard. The larger branches of the trees that have shrunk because of being inside the walls and under the roof, where they can not grow much. So they try to move slowly from there and look like newly discharged patients from hospital. Who become half-shocked on coming to the outside world.

Explanation : The speaker of the poem, sits in her house, the doors of which open to the veranda. She is writing a letters. She hardly mentions in her letters about the trees that are moving out to the empty forest. The poet presents a conflict between man and nature. Man cuts trees and uses to make interior and house. Through these lines the poet is indicating towards a possible rebellion by nature against man as they strive to go outside the house into the open in a full moon night where the moon is shining in the open sky and the night is very fresh. In the last line poet says he can smell the leaves and lichens coming from the trees that reach her room like a voice.

Explanation : The speaker listens to the sounds coming from the leaves and lichens of the trees. These sounds will not be there in the morning as the trees will move out to the forest in the night.
Now, the speaker can hear the sound of glass breaking due to the efforts of the twigs. The trees hurry outside and in doing  so, they fall on each other and get struck at different places. As the trees go in the open, it seems like the wind is moving fast  towards them to meet. The tall trees can finally stand straight as they are free and they are so tall that they have broken the moon into several pieces like a broken mirror. The moon now sits like the crowns on the heads of the tall oak trees.
