Whenever it comes to rivers, one of the longest rivers of India, the Brahmaputra river is also at the top. It is one of the longest rivers of India. Its length is 2700 km and this river descends down the slopes of the western Kailash mountain, the Tsangpo river originating from the sacred Mansarovar lake in Tibet. Then this river is called Brahmaputra River. 

 

The name of this river is different at different places. After leaving Mansarovar in Tibet and joining the Ganges in Bangladesh, this river is called (Brahmaputra in bangladesh known as) Padma River. After which it joins the ocean in the form of Meghna river. 


Thus, due to its length and breadth, this river is one of the largest rivers not only in India but also in Asia. Flowing through various places, this river travels a total length of 2906 km. 


This river flows for about 1,800 miles till its source in the Himalayas i.e. the confluence of the Ganges River, after which the mixed waters of the two rivers fall into the Bay of Bengal.

The Brahmaputra River has its origin near the Mansarovar Lake located in the Purang district of Tibet in the north of the Himalayas. At this place this river is called Yarlung Tsangpo.  Flowing in Tibet, this river enters the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Flowing in the Assam valley, it is called Brahmaputra and then on entering Bangladesh it is called Jamuna. After confluence with Padma, their combined stream is called Meghna, which joins the Bay of Bengal forming the Sundarbans delta.



Holy facts about Brahmaputra River

Yarlung Tsangpo or Brahmaputra, is the only male river which literally means 'son of Brahma'. This river is revered by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists.


Buddhists believe that long ago the Chang Thang plateau was a great lake. A kind bodhisattva seriously felt that the water should reach the people below.


Therefore, he built a watershed through the Himalayan Mountains for the Yarlung Tsangpo so that the water could flow downstream and enrich the plains. 


For Hindus, the Brahmaputra was the son of the river Brahma and Amogha Rishi. Amogha was the beautiful wife of sage Shantanu.


Brahma, enchanted by her good form, made loving strides, which led to the birth of a boy, who was greatly troubling Amogha. The boy flowed down like water.


Sage Shantanu placed this 'son of Brahma' right in the middle of the four great mountains of Kailash, Gandhamadana, Jarudhi and concurrently. He grew into a great lake, the Brahma Kund.



In which countries does this river flow

This river flows through three countries-originated in Tibet, flows through India and then drains into Bangladesh. The mountains, valleys and forests through which the Tsangpo flows in Tibet are considered extremely sacred.


Ancient Tibetan scrolls, written by sages, speak of sanctuaries or beyuls deep in the Himalayas. Here, aging slows down and animals and plants also have miraculous powers.


Tibetans believe that in this area, perhaps the world's deepest gorge, through a spring below, is the Shangri-La, the gateway to heaven on earth.
