The World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year.


Environment is our basic life support system. It provides the air we breath, the water we drink, the food we eat and the land where we live.


Our environment is changing because our needs are increasing day by day. To fulfill these needs we often don’t think about the environment and start modifying it.


How do human beings modify this natural environment ? The car fumes pollute the air, water is collected in a pot, food is served in vessels and land is used to build factories.


Human beings make cars, mills, factories and manufacture containers. This is how human beings modify natural environment.


Biotic: The world of living organisms is known as biotic. e.g. plants and animals.

Abiotic: The world of non-living elements is known as abiotic. e.g. land.


Ecosystem: It is a system formed by the interaction of all living organisms with each other and with the physical and chemical factors of the environment in which they live, all linked by transfer of energy and material.

(i) What is an ecosystem ?

Ans: The system formed by the interaction of all living organisms with each other and with the physical and chemical factors of the environment in which they live, all linked by the transfer of energy and material is called an ecosystem.


(ii) What do you mean by natural environment ?

Ans: The natural environment consists of land, water, air, plants and animals. Thus, the natural environment refers to both biotic (plants and animals) and abiotic (land) conditions that exist on the earth.


(iii) Which are the major components of the environment ?

Ans: The major components of the environment are;

(i) Natural Components (Air, Water, Land & Living things)

(ii) Human Made Components (components created by human beings e.g. parks, markets, buildings, roads etc)

(iii) Human Components (human populations, individual, family)

Ans: Four examples of human-made environments are buildings, markets, bridges, and roads.


(v) What is lithosphere ?

Ans: The lithosphere is the solid crust or the hard top layer of the earth. It is made up of rocks and minerals and covered by a thin layer of soil. It is an irregular surface with various landforms such as mountains, plateaus, plains, valleys, etc.


(vi) Which are the two major components of biotic environment ?

Ans: The two major components of biotic environment are Plants and animals.


(vii) What is biosphere ?

Ans: The biosphere is a narrow zone of the earth where land, water, and air interact with each other to support life. Thus, plant and animal kingdom together make biosphere, ie, the living world.

4. Give reasons.

(i) Man modifies his environment

Ans: Man modifies his environment to fulfill his basic needs, as it is the basic life support system. He cuts forests and clears land for agriculture, industries, habitation and comfort. He uses the land to build buildings, roads, railways and set up markets, industries. Humans have used the fossils for their own development, disturbing the ecological system and animal habitats.


(ii) Plants and animals depend on each other

Ans: Plants and animals are interdependent on each other, because plants are the producers and animals are the consumers. Plants release oxygen in the atmosphere, which is inhaled by human beings and humans exhale carbon dioxide, which helps plants in producing their own food.
