Summary of poem Macavity : The Mystery Cat is about a fictional character, cat named Macavity. The poet has personified the cat named Macavity to criminal. He has compared the cat with many human-like qualities. Macavity is a mystery cat because no crime agency was ever able to arrest this criminal mastermind during or after his committing a crime. Poet describes Macavity as a special cat as he can float in the air and possesses various other magical powers. The cat not only breaks the human law but also breaks the law of gravity.

Ans: (i) No, Macavity is not a cat really.

     (ii) Macavity can be a fictional character created by the poet whose actions resemble those of a crook’s.


2. Complete the following sentences.

(i) A master criminal is one who ___________________

(ii) The Scotland Yard is baffled because ___________________

(iii) ___________________ because Macavity moves much faster than them.

Ans: (i) A master criminal is one who can defy the law.

(ii) The Scotland Yard is baffled because whenever they reach the scene of crime, they cannot find Macavity.

(iii) Nobody can catch Macavity at the scene of crime because Macavity moves much faster than them.

Ans: Macavity is a cunning cat who is very tall and thin with sunken eyes and brow deeply lined with thought. While its head is like dome, its coat is soiled and hairs is uncombed.

6. Having read the poem, try to guess whether the poet is fond of cats. If so, why does he call Macavity a fiend and monster ?

Ans: Yes, it seems like the poet is fond of cats, it seems that he has a poet who is mischievous. He might have used a cat in order to create a negative character who is a criminal and escapes easily from police with its quick movement. He calls Macavity a ‘fiend’ and a ‘monster’ because he might have wanted to portray an evil side. 


7. Has the poet used exaggeration for special effect ? Find a few examples of it and read those lines aloud.

Ans: The poet has used exaggeration for special effect, the following statements are examples of exaggeration.

(i) He is the master criminal who can defy the law.

(ii) He breaks the law of gravity.

(iii) His powers of hesitation would make a fakir stare.

(iv) He is a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity
