Chivvy poem Class 7 Summary in English

Summary of poem 'Chivvy' is about a list of various do’s and don’ts that the grown-ups dictate to young children. The adults constantly give a list of instructions to the children about how to sit, how to talk, how to eat, how to behave and so on. Through this poem, poet indicates a passage of time when the young child has grown up and is incapable of taking a decision on his own. The same adults, then, chide the grown up child for not being able to think independently.

कविता Chivvy का सारांश विभिन्न प्रकार के करें और न करें की एक सूची के बारे में है जो बड़े छोटे बच्चों को निर्देशित करते हैं।  वयस्क लगातार बच्चों को निर्देशों की एक सूची देते हैं कि कैसे बैठना है, कैसे बात करना है, कैसे खाना है, कैसे व्यवहार करना है आदि।  इस कविता के माध्यम से कवि उस समय की ओर संकेत करता है जब छोटा बच्चा बड़ा हो गया है और स्वयं निर्णय लेने में असमर्थ है।  फिर वही वयस्क, बड़े हो चुके बच्चे को स्वतंत्र रूप से सोचने में सक्षम नहीं होने के लिए डांटते हैं।

Working with the Poem

1. Discuss these questions in small groups before you answer them.

(i) When is a grown-up likely to say this ?

     Don’t talk with your mouth full.

(ii) When are you likely to be told this ?

     Say thank you.

(iii) When do you think an adult would say this?

     No one thinks you are funny.

Ans: (i) A grown-up is likely to say this when children start talking in between the meal with food in their mouth.

(ii) We are likely to be told to say thank you when someone helped us or given us something.

(iii) When children act weird or do something funny to gain the attention then adult would say no one thinks you are funny.

2. The last two lines of the poem are not prohibitions or instructions. What is the adult now asking the child to do ? Do you think the poet is suggesting that this is unreasonable ? Why ?

Ans: The adult is now asking the child to think independently. The poet finds this entirely unreasonable because the young child has not been trained to use his mind. He has only been trained to follow the instructions given by the adults.

3. Why do you think grown-ups say the kind of things mentioned in the poem ? Is it important that they teach children good manners, and how to behave in public ?

Ans: The adults constantly give instructions to their children for various reasons. They try to train them to behave in a decent, well-mannered and Sophisticated way. This, however, robs away their childlike innocence.

4. If you had to make some rules for grown-ups to follow, what would you say ? Make at least five such rules. Arrange the lines as in a poem.

Ans: If I had to make some rules for grown-ups to follow, then I would make rules like:

Get up early in the morning.

Make proper use of time.

Respect your elders.

Keep your surrounding neat and clean.

Don not quarrel. etc
