thief: a person who steals something  from another person or place

dig: to make a hole in the ground or to remove something from the ground with a tool

staircase: a set of stairs inside a building including the posts and rails

lame: unable to walk well because of an injury to the leg or foot

grumbled: complained about something

toppled: became unsteady and fell down

wrap: to cover something completely in paper or other material


(b) now rewrite the sentences replacing the underlined parts with the words you learnt above.

Ans: The story was about two friends - a monkey and a fox. They did adventures for food together. One day, they looted a banana seller, and the monkey climbed up a tree with the bananas. But the fox could not climb. The monkey cheated him and ate all the bananas alone.


Which character in the story you liked most ?

Ans: In the story I liked the character of the fox.


Who was the character in the story you didn't like ?   

Ans: I did not like the character of the monkey. 


(b) Now, write a paragraph on a story you have read in your own words. 

Ans:                The Greedy Man and the Golden Eggs

Long ago, in a certain village, there lived a poor peasant. One day he found a swan in a pond. He caught it and brought it to his house. He liked the beautiful swan and kept it in his room at night. 


The next morning there was a big surprise for him. He saw that the swan had laid an egg that was golden in colour. He then realises that the swan laid golden eggs. He took the egg  to the market and sold it at a very high price. Every day the swan laid a golden egg, soon the man became rich. 


But he was not only a greedy but also a dull. He wanted to have all the eggs in the swan's stomach at a time. He thought that there were a large number of golden eggs in the swan's stomach. So he killed it, but he did not find any eggs.

6. (a) Read the following sentence. We use them generally while giving directions to someone. Remember, these are called imperative sentence.

7. Let's learn some type of sentences:

We use sentences to perform certain functions. Depending on the function we have different types of sentences. e.g.

(b) Tom and Huck entered the house.

These two sentences are assertive sentences. They state something or give some information.

Here are two other sentences:

(c) Have you thought of the pickaxe ?

(d) Who bought them here ?

Sentences (c) and (d) are interrogative sentences. They are used to ask questions.

Here are two other sentences:

(e) Read the story.

(f) Switch on the light please.

These sentences are instructions or orders or requests. They are called imperative sentences.

Now look at two other sentences:

(g) What a beautiful picture!

(h) How lovely the picture is!

These sentences express strong feelings or emotions. They are called exclamatory sentences.
