Chapter 1: Electric Charges and Fields | Electric charges and fields question answer class 12

Electric Charges and Fields Class 12 Physics Chapter 1, this chapter will help students solve questions based on calculation of forces between two charged particles, which are placed at a distance from one another. students will also learn the reason behind the charge which appears in materials when you rub it against one another.

Electric charges and their conservation. Coulomb’s law–force between two point charges, forces between multiple charges; superposition principle and continuous charge distribution. Electric field, electric field due to a point charge, electric field lines; electric dipole, electric field due to a dipole; torque on a dipole in a uniform electric field.

Electric flux, statement of Gauss’s theorem and its applications to find field due to infinitely long straight wire, uniformly charged infinite plane sheet and uniformly charged thin spherical shell (field inside and outside).

FAQs

Q. What does it mean that an electric charge is quantized ?

Ans: The electric charge of a body is quantized, meaning that only integral numbers of electrons can be transferred from one body to another. Charges are not transferred in fractions, so a body only has a total charge in integral multiples of electric charge.

Q. What is the reason why an electric field line is a continuous curve ?

Ans: A charge experiences a continuous force when traced in an electrostatic field, so an electrostatic field line is a continuous curve. The field line cannot have sudden breaks because the charge moves continuously and does not have the potential to jump from one point to another.

Q. Why do electric field lines never cross each other ?

Ans: The electric lines of force give the direction of the electric field. In case, two lines of force intersect, there will be two directions of the electric field at the point of intersection, which is not possible.

Q. Why can the quantization of electric charge be ignored when dealing with macroscopic charges ?

Ans: In macroscopic or large scale charges, the charges used are huge as compared to the magnitude of electric charge.

Q. What is the force between two small charged spheres ?

Ans: The force between two small charged spheres is 6 × 10−3 N. The charges are of the same nature, so the force between them is repulsive.
