1. Answer the following questions: 

a) Why did King John dislike the Abbot ? 

Ans: King John disliked everyone who was rich and powerful. King John Disliked the Abbot because he was richer than the King.


b) How many servants did the Abbot have ?

Ans: The Abbot had hundreds of Servants.


c) What three questions did the King ask the Abbot ? 

Ans: The three questions that King asked the abbot are as follows:  

(i) What is the king's worth

(ii) How long will it take the king to ride around the world

(iii) What the king was thinking.


d) What did the shepherd ask for the Abbot to help him ? 

Ans: Shepherd asked the Abbot to exchange his clothes and lend him Abbot's rope for a few days in order to help him.


e) Why could not the shepherd work for the King as his Abbot ? 

Ans:  The shepherd could not work for the King, because he can only think and speak but cannot either read or write.


2 Complete the following sentences

3. Turn the following sentences into reported speech:

(i) The King said, "What do you mean by this ?" 

Ans: The king asked what did he meant by that.


(ii) The shepherd said to the King, "Your Majesty, it is only a simple arithmetic." 

Ans: The shepherd told King that it was only a simple arithmetic.


(ii) The King said to the shepherd, "Aren't you the Abbot of Canterbury ?" 

Ans: The King asked the shepherd, whether he was not the Abbot of Canterbury.


(iv) The shepherd said to the King, "l am in fact only a humble shepherd of his." 

Ans: The shepherd told the king that in fact, he was only a humble shepherd of him.


(v) The King said, "Don't carry your jokes too far."

Ans: The king ordered not to carry his jokes too far.
