Yamuna originates from the slopes of Bandar Panch Massif in the great Himalayas near Yamunotri in western Uttarakhand. It flows rapidly in the south through the foothills of the Himalayas and flows west along the border between the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, in the Indo-Gangetic plain, originating from Uttarakhand. From where does the Yamuna river originate

Yamuna River is also known as Jamuna River. The origin of river Yamuna is from Yamunotri. It is said that the pilgrimage of pilgrims is incomplete without Yamunotri Darshan.  Flowing parallel, this river joins the Ganges at Prayag. A peak near its origin on the Himalayas is named Bandarpunch.  


This is the highest peak in the Garhwal region, it is about 6500 meters high. This river flows for many miles from its place of origin, descending very rapidly from the mountain slopes, its current goes on flowing for many miles.


The Yamuna River is the largest tributary of India, the second largest tributary of the Ganges River basin. The Yamuna originates at an altitude of 20955 feet from the Yamunotri Glacier, which is located at Bandarpunch, a peak in the Lower Himalayas in Uttarakhand. The Yamuna river merges with the Ganges at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, a holy place for Hindus.  



How Yamuna River got its name ?

The name Yamuna River is derived from the Indian language Sanskrit, which means twin. The river Yamuna is mentioned in the Hindu religious texts Rigveda and Atharvaveda. The Yamuna river is also associated with the birth of the Hindu god Krishna. Hence it is considered one of the holiest rivers of India among the 7 holiest rivers of India.

The Yamuna river passes through Delhi and it also adds to the beauty of the city of Agra. South of Delhi and now entirely within Uttar Pradesh, it turns to the southeast near Mathura and passes through Agra, Firozabad and Etawah. Below the Etawah, it receives several southern tributaries, the largest of which are the Chambal, Sindh, Betwa and Ken rivers.  


Near Allahabad, after a course of about 855 miles, the Yamuna River joins the Ganges. The confluence of the two rivers is considered a particularly sacred place for Hindus and is home to annual festivals as well as the Kumbh Mela, which is held every 12 years and is attended by lakhs of devotees.



What is special about the Yamuna River ?

Talking about religious beliefs, Yamuna river has a deep relation with Shri Krishna. It was through the Yamuna river that Krishna's father Vasudev carried the newborn Shri Krishna in a basket from Mathura to Gokul to his foster father Nandraj.

According to a religious belief, the Yamuna river was poisonous during Krishna's childhood, because there lived a five-headed snake named Kaliya, who did not want humans to consume the water of the Yamuna river. 


Sri Krishna had jumped into poisonous rivers in his childhood and won the war by fighting Kaliya snake.  Krishna later removed the poison of the Yamuna river and made its water clean and potable.


There is also a hot water tank in Yamuna river at Yamunotri. This pool is also known as Surya Kund. It is believed that this pool is dedicated to the son of the sun god Surya. The water in Surya Kund is so hot that people can easily make tea and rice in it and boil potatoes using this water. The water temperature of Surya Kund is estimated to be around 88 degree Celsius. Rice and potatoes prepared in Surya Kund are offered to the deity at Yamunotri temple.

The Yamuna River originates from a glacier in Uttarakhand. From Uttarakhand this holy river flows into Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Statistics show that this river emerges pure from its place of birth and gets polluted by the way as it reaches the Delhi-NCR region which becomes the main reason for its pollution. 


Although in the year 1984, the Government of India had also started a mission to clean Yamuna but could not succeed in it. Industrialization and dumping of industrial waste have been the major causes of pollution in Delhi-NCR.


Thus, containing various facts in itself, the Yamuna river is one of the many other holy rivers of India, which along with its origin, sanctifies those places wherever it passes.
