One the eve of Magh Bihu    celebrate    community feast merry-making    gather    people   Uruka     food items

Ans: The Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is one of the most important community festivals in Assam. It is celebrated with community feasts after the annual harvest. The night before Magh Bihu is called Uruka, It is the night of feasts and merry-making. People in villages and in many areas gather and build temple like structures, it is called Bhelaghor or Meji. On the eve of Magh Bihu women folk get ready for the next day with food items like Pitha, Laru, mah-karai, takeli pitha, sunga pitha, sunga saul, bora rice at home and barious dishes, vegetables, fish, eggs and meat items are made.

Ans: Bihu is national festival of Assam. People in Assam observed three Bihus in a year, but among the three Bihus Magh bihu or Bhogali Bihu and Bohag Bihu or Rangali Bihu has great significance on the people of Assam. Magh bihu is celebrated in January, Bohag bihu is celebrated in April and Kati bihu in November. The special foods made during this festival are Pitha, chira with doi, etc. Bohag Bihu celebrates the beginning of the sowing of the seeds. Kati Bihu for the fulfillment of the sowing and Bhogali is celebrated during the arrival of harvesting time.
