                          I. His First Flight

The story “His First Flight” is written by “Liam O’ Flaherty” is about a young seagull who is afraid to fly. He could not fly due to fear and trust his own wings, but his younger siblings despite their much shorter wings flew fearlessly. The young seagull became sad when he saw his parents perfecting his brothers and sister in the art of flying. His parents scold and taunt him for not even trying to fly. They even threaten him to leave him alone and hungry if he does not. The following day, he is left alone and feeling hungry. He tries to seek the attention of his family members. The young seagull cries out of hunger hoping his mother would help. On seeing his mother come to him with the fish, he gets excited. But later his mother stopped mid-way to tempted him. He gets maddened out of hunger and takes a dive at the fish, forgetting for a moment that he is afraid of flying. Finally, he took his first flight. All the family members celebrate his victory and screamed around him out of joy. They praised him and offered him scraps of dog - fish out of delight as he made a successful attempt.  He also attempts at floating in the sea that he was once afraid of. Thus, he overcomes his fear and realises that it is all in the mind.

                           II. Black Aeroplane

The story “Black Aeroplane” is written by "Frederick Forsyth " the story is about a pilot who is flying from Paris to London at night. While taking his flight, he dreams about the long holiday with his family and about the good english breakfast he would have upon landing. He contacted Parish Control centre, soon as he crosses Paris, he saw dark clouds that were a sign of upcoming storm.Paris was about 150 kilometres behind him. He knew that it was not possible to fly up and over those storm clouds. He was confused for a moment. The right decision would have been to turn back to Paris for the sake of safety. Everything was fearful at that moment, the narrator decided to take risk and flew into the storm, but everything went out of control. Compass and other instruments stopped working. He was unable to see outside the plane as the plane was twisting. He tried to contact Paris control but couldn't as it was lost in the storm. When all hope was lost, he saw another black aeroplane without light, whose pilot waved him and signaled to follow him. The narrator was panicked as there was very less amount of fuel left. The pilot of the black aeroplane guided the narrator out of the storm and disappeared as soon as they saw light. When the narrator landed safely on the runway, he went to thank the pilot but saw no one. Then he asked the woman in the control room about the other pilot, he is left in shock and dumb when she says that his was the only plane in the sky.

                         I. His First Flight

His First Flight is about a family of seagulls. This story highlights the importance of family and friends in our lives. It also gives the message that one needs to believe in self to overcome from the difficult situations of own life.

The seagull family consists of six seagulls - father, mother, three sons and one daughter. The youngest seagull in the family is unable to fly due to fear even after several tries. All of them are expert in flying high except the youngest seagull. His parents have tried several times to teach him how to fly but he is scared, he depends on the food that his parents bring for him.

The youngest seagull is afraid of flying, he thinks if he flies, his wings would not support him and he would fall down in the sea. He doesn't try even after his parents have rebuke him, threatened him that if he doesn't learn to fly then he would die of hunger.

After so many failed attempts, his parents leave him alone on the rock without food. They even taunt him for his cowardice. The young seagull looks at his brothers and sister enjoying flying, swimming, diving in the sea for fish hunting, but no one comes to offer him food.

Time passes and the young seagull could not tolerate the hunger and the heat. Then he moves closer to the ledge and pretends to fall asleep but nobody takes notice of him. His brothers and sister have already had breakfast and his father seems busy in admiring them, mother looks at him and she tries to tempt him with pieces of fish.

The young seagull is very hungry, he cries and begged but it doesn't affect his mother. He is surprised at his mother's ignorance of his pitiful condition. Thus, he dives for food, he is about to fall as soon as he dives.

The young seagull begins to fall in the sea. He is afraid of drowning, so he tries to spread his wings outwards and begins flying. At start he feels a little dizzy but all his later all his fear disappeared. He soars slowly downwards and upwards. Finally he could fly on his own.

The seagull becomes so happy and soars higher calling 'ga, ga, ga'. It is really a joyous moment for the family, his parents along his brothers and sister come near to encourage and cheer him. The young seagull successfully made his first flight.

                       II. Black Aeroplane

Two Stories About Flying, the narrator was flying to England to enjoy his holiday. He wanted to reach England in time so that he could enjoy a good English breakfast with his family.

The narrator was flying his aeroplane at night over France to England. He was eager to meet his family, and dreaming of his holiday. The stars were shining in the clear sky. Even the city Paris could be seen down below. He called Paris control to get instructed about the way. Then. He was instructed to turn 12 degrees west.

Till then, everything was going well before he saw the storm and Paris was about 150 kilometres behind him. It was natural for the narrator to panic. He knew that it was not possible to fly up and over those storm clouds. He was confused for a moment.

Everything was fearful at the moment, the narrator decided to take risk and flew into the storm, but everything went out of control. Compass and other instruments stopped working. He was unable to see outside the plane as the plane was twisting in the air. He tried to contact Paris control but couldn't as it was lost in the storm.

Suddenly, he saw another black aeroplane  in the storm by his side without lights on its wings. It seemed strange to the narrator but he was glad to see another  person in the storm. The other pilot waved at him and signalled to follow, the narrator did so because hi did not have other option.

The narrator flew for half and hour which was strange for him as he had fuel left only for five or ten minutes. He left fearful but suddenly he saw two bright lines in front of him. It was a runway. He was able to land safely which gave him a sigh of relief. It was like a miracle for him.

After landing safely, the narrator came out of his plan to thanked the pilot of the black aeroplane but he was shocked to see no one there. Then he went to Control Tower and asked the woman about the place and the black aeroplane. Hearing his words the woman laughed and said that there was no other aeroplane except his. It was a big surprise to the narrator. He was dumb then as he had no explanation for the miracle that happened to him.

Yes, usually it is natural that doing something new for the first time is challenging. All birds must be afraid to make their first flight.

Ans: The young seagull was very hungry. It was his hunger that compelled him to fly. When he saw his mother tearing pieces of fish that lay at her feet then his hunger intensified. Not being able to control his hunger, his hunger overpowered his fear of flying and expanse of sea the young seagull finally fly.

Ans: Yes, I had a similar experience while learning to swim. In my first attempt I almost drowned, swimming was difficult for me as I was feared.
My father encouraged me to overcome that fear and helped me to learn the skill of swimming. Later I practiced and developed my confidence.

Q5. In the case of a bird flying. It seems a natural act, and a foregone conclusion that it should succeed. In the examples you have given in answer to the previous question, was your success guaranteed, or was it important for you to try, regardless of a possibility of failure ?
Ans: We face some problems in the initial stage while learning a new skills. Due to the fear of failure, we hesitate to perform a task that something new. In case of the seagull, his parents cajoled him to fly.

I have given the answers to previous question, I was cajoled by my father to learn swimming. So at first I was to learn swimming and overcome my fear. If someone is determined to do something then success is assured.
